thanks for your response! i'm trying to decide between rice and SMU, but it really just comes down to money. i put a deposit down at SMU a few weeks ago and i also put the the engineering floor as my first choice on my housing application! are you in the UHP?
No problem! When it comes to people wanting to come to SMU, I always wanna help, that’s why I’m in APES (Ambassadors to Prospective Engineering Students). Rice is amazing school, congratulations on both of your acceptances. I’m not in the UHP, but I got a lot of money from the engineering school, so don’t worry :)
Ever hear of Apple app development being done on a Hackintosh? I know I'll move on to Apple development sooner or later and don't want to have to purchase a Mac PC if I don't have to haha.
I have, but theres always problems with them :/ They work for small projects, but aren’t that reliable for the long run.
hello! I just had a quick question for ya. How much math is involved with being a computer science major? I'm in high school and I'm interested in computer science, but math has never been one of my strong suits so I'm not sure if this would be a good major for me.
It depends on what kind of math you are talking about. If you’re talking about not being that good at Calculus, you NEED NOT WORRY! The only kind of math necessary to be proficient in Computer Science is discrete mathematics, which is essentially just logic in a more computational form. If you were going into Electrical Engineering, I’d say avoid it like the plague, but Computer Science isn’t calculus-intensive

Hey! I'm a high school senior and I'm considering studying computer science at SMU next year. I had a few questions that hopefully you can help me with. How much programming experience did you have before you started college? I've only taken an intro class, so I feel like I might be a little behind.. Also, what kind of computer do you use? I have a MacBook Pro, and I was surprised during one of the classes that I sat in on that most of the students and even the professor used a Mac. Any opinion?
Hey! Ok first of all, lemme tell you that I’M LOVIN’ YOUR CONSIDERATION! SMU is amazing school, I never would have gone anywhere else :) As far as experience, sophomore year of high school I took AP and got a 5, but then unfortunately switched to a school that had NO computer science classes, so that was as far as I got. The 5 did get me out of the intro class (Java), but that’s not normal, so don’t think you’d come in behind. One of my closest friends just changed his major from Mechanical to Computer Science and he’ll be Junior next year, you’re fine bud!
I personally use a Mac, but as far as which type of computer is better for programming, a Mac or PC, it like asking what’s better, AT&T or Verizon: depends on what you wanna do with it. For basic programming, like class stuff, it doesn’t matter at all. However if you wanna be making iPhone apps, I’d say stay with the Macbook obviously haha
But back to SMU as a whole, its a great place for Computer Science. You head advisor, Mark Fontenot, is the most amazing teacher I’ve ever had, and there’s many roads you can take for specializations (gaming, security, biometrics, etc.).
Hope that helped future Stang :) ! and PS - LOOK INTO LIVING ON THE ENGINEERING FLOOR! It’s EPIC.
WANNA SEE ENGINEERS SINGING AND DANCING IN A NINTENDO-THEMED MUSICAL?

Unfortunately, due to the combination of the fact we weren’t a Greek organization possibly stretched the theme they gave us a little far, our group didn’t even place. The audience disagreed, even the other competitors didn’t agree with the standing. The school newspaper didn’t even bother getting our show’s description correct (“an adventure through Georgia and Italy in a Mario Kart themed production. ”). Help our group and upvote us on Reddit! It would mean the world to our group. We worked our tails off, and to be robbed like that was unfortunate. I mean c’mon, ENGINEERS learning Paso Doble? That’s pretty badass.

where do you go to school?? i really want to work in a biometrics lab as an REU. i am very jealous.
I go to Southern Methodist U. (it’s in Dallas if you haven’t heard of it). It was actually kind of odd how I got in it: back when I was still a prospective, I went to this early-accepted engineering student reception, and began talking with a current computer science major. He was in the program and told me about it and I was like “THAT’S SO COOL I’D LOVE TO DO THAT!!!” Well, first semester comes and goes and it turns out he recommended me for a position annnd I got hired :) It’s really cool stuff, so try networking your way in! It worked for me haha
